Component of the involuntary nervous system. It mainly controls the "automatic" supply of the internal organs, the blood vessels, muscles and the glands. The sympathetic nervous system is largely beyond conscious control. The sympathetic nervous system influences the heart directly via the cardiac nerves (via the beta receptors) and indirectly via the release of hormones (adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine).
