The right heart catheter is inserted into the right side of the heart through a vein in the arm or leg. This allows measurement of the pressure and oxygen saturation in the right ventricle of the heart as well as in the pulmonary arteries. Furthermore, the blood flow and thus the shape of the heart chambers and vessels can be visualised by injecting X-ray contrast medium.
