Heart surgery with opening of the chest. This involves opening the chest by making a longitudinal incision through the sternum. Alternatively, a lateral access route is created between the ribs. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, during which time the tasks of the lungs and heart are taken over by a heart-lung machine.
