Active substance of the tobacco plant. One of the strongest plant poisons of all, which initially has a stimulating, later paralysing effect on the autonomic nervous system. Just 60 milligrams of nicotine is a lethal dose for humans. Nicotine promotes vascular spasms, particularly affecting diseased coronary vessels.
