Homocysteine is a sulphur-containing amino acid that is produced as a short-lived intermediate product in the body's own metabolism. Homocysteine promotes the storage of fats in the vessel walls, increases blood viscosity and increases the risk of thrombosis. A high homocysteine content is seen as a cardiogenic risk factor.
