This is a mechanical procedure for cardiovascular and/or pulmonary support in cases of cardiac pumping failure and/or pulmonary failure. Oxygen-depleted blood is withdrawn from the patient via a pump (centrifugal/roller pump) and passed through an oxygenator (artificial lung) where gas exchange takes place. The oxygen-rich blood is then returned to the patient. The cardiovascular function is partially or completely replaced by the pump.
