This is a method of mechanical cardiovascular support in which the pumping function of the heart is partially or completely taken over by a pump. This can be done by ECMO (including an oxygenator) or by a pump without an intermediate oxygenator if lung function is normal. In this case, both chambers of the heart must be supported separately or only the left chamber, depending on the function of the right chamber.
