Acute coronary syndrome is a collective term for sudden and persistent circulatory disturbances of the coronary vessels and is used as a preliminary diagnosis until a distinction can be made between acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina pectoris. Chest pain typical of an infarction that lasts longer than 20 minutes can mean a heart attack and thus a life-threatening condition.
