Smallest form of blood vessel in the body. The capillaries are the finest, end branches of the arteries, which collect and continue as veins and lead the blood back to the heart. This is where the exchange of nutrients and the release of oxygen from the red blood cells (erythrocytes) into the tissue takes place.
