Clinical studies

The further development of the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases is a central mission of the German Heart Centre Munich. Clinical research is an essential component of this. The spectrum of studies conducted here ranges from observational studies to randomised treatment trials. The focus of research is the treatment of structural heart disease. Studies are also conducted on the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease, aortic surgery, heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. Many of the studies conducted so far have been published in high-ranking scientific journals.

Supervision of doctoral and post-doctoral students

Scientific activity often enables a broader understanding of the field of cardiac surgery that goes beyond the experience gained in everyday clinical practice. Therefore, scientific activity is desired and supported by students and by medical staff. The INSURE Institute, in conjunction with the Graduate School of the TUM, offers the opportunity to complete a medical doctoral thesis in cardiac surgery. There are various projects to choose from, which can be viewed under the link . If you are interested, please contact the supervisor of the respective project (see list). The INSURE Institute also supports the scientific work of medical staff, e.g. in the context of a post-doctoral qualification.

Studies according to the Medical Devices Act and industry-sponsored studies

The introduction of new medical devices, e.g. latest-generation heart valves, requires close cooperation between clinicians and industry partners. Our team can look back on numerous studies conducted in collaboration with an industrial partner, for example post-marketing studies of new valve prostheses, as well as studies on novel heart failure therapies or the evaluation of new biomarkers. The outpatient study team is funded in part by industry-sponsored studies, and can provide the following services:

  • Organisation of the MPG/Kyoto Protocol proofs
  • Screening of patients
  • Organisation and performance of pre- and postoperative examinations, as well as any follow-up examinations (clinical, echocardiography)
  • Supervision of audits
